Butterfly Housetop

82" x 92" The butterflies came from a cotton shower curtain that belonged to the mother of a friend and was gifted to me. Machine pieced and quilted on a domestic machine.

Leave No Trace

9" x 12" One of a series of Leave No Trace mini quilts that incorporate 'traces' that got left and then found on trails or water. This one includes fishing line and lures, pieces of broken jewelry, a piece of rusted metal and part of a helium balloon.

Thither and Yon

83" x 91" A cabin (In this case many cabins) on an island surrounded by quilted weeds and vines. The flow of the surrounding (red) river is interrupted by sand bars, logs, and rocks. The river banks are strewn with bits of river treasure - butterflies, flowers, shells, river glass, etc. Machine pieced and quilted on a domestic machine. Incidental hand quilting and hand embroidery. Embellished with laces and rickrack.

Shoreline

81" x 99" The starter to Shoreline was two panels. I free-cut (no ruler) the panel into pieces isolating interesting objects. Appropriately colored fabrics were stacked, free-cut, and then reassembled into strip blocks. The blocks were then assembled into a loosely interpreted fence rail quilt. The result is a fragmented landscape that invites you to seek out familiar elements in much the same way as your eye seeks out familiar elements in the wild. A complete, uncut panel is incorporated into the back of the quilt. Machine pieced and machine quilted on a domestic machine.

Irene

89" x 94" I assembled these fabrics to make a library quilt - shelves of books - and then went on vacation. By the time I returned, Irene had demolished or damaged much of Upper Jay including the Wells Memorial Library. For the next week or so I shoveled mud by day and slashed and assembled fabric into blocks representing toppled books in the evening. I added brown in the bottom of the quilt to depict the mud on the lower two shelves of the library. Inspired by the quilters of Gees Bend. Machine pieced, hand quilted.

Hurricane Mountain

43" x 52" This is a montage from hikes up Hurricane Mountain from Crow Clearing. The blocks were created independent from each other and then assembled and quilted. It evolved day by day during the early days of CoVid-19. Machine pieced. Hand appliquéd. Hand quilted with incidental hand embroidery.

Bethany has been quilting for more than 50 years. She dabbled in almost all of the fiber arts before focusing on quilting. Her first quilts were traditional and have evolved to be more innovative in design. She usually uses older techniques, tools, and traditional cotton fabrics. She also likes to work with repurposed fabrics such as corduroy, wool, drapery fabrics, denim, shirting and others.

Bethany grew up in Ithaca, NY. After teaching science and math at traditional all-boys boarding schools for 30 years, first at Trinity-Pawling in Pawling, NY and then at the Kiski School in Saltsburg, PA, she retired to the Adirondacks to paddle and quilt. She enjoys vegetable gardening, hiking in the summer and X-C skiing in the winter.
